What is Weeworld and has Weeworld.com been closed? How do I access my Weeworld account or create a Weemee avatar?
About Weeworld.
Originally founded back in 2000, WeeWorld is an online social game and chat service, which was created by Mike Kinsella and John McGuire, and based out of Glasgow, Scotland. It is sometimes referenced as one of the first examples of a modern social networking site, pre-dating the likes of Myspace, Bebo and Facebook.
Predominantly targeted towards teenagers, the service offered integration with various popular instant messaging service, including MSN Messenger, AOL Messenger and Skype. Its global reach soon expanded to the point where WeeWorld’s parent company also had offices in London, England and Boston in the United States.
Essentially, WeeWorld served as a virtual world, in which users would take on the role of a ‘WeeMee’, or two-dimensional cartoon avatar. Within the virtual world, users could interact with one another. It is estimated that close to 200 million WeeMees have been created around the world since the service was first launched.
Aside from their presence in the virtual WeeWorld universe, WeeMees became popular across a variety of different platforms in the early to mid 2000s, often serving as profile pictures for instant messenger users. Microsoft began offering WeeMees as avatars for MSN Messenger in 2003, while later associations were formed between WeeWorld and the UK-base social networking site Friends Reunited and the global social media site Facebook.
In addition, WeeWorld had promotional ties to a number of musicians, due to agreements with their record labels. Examples of these artists include Alicia Keys and Avril Lavigne. As a result of the partnership, WeeMee versions of the two artists were available for use. Merchandise could also be purchased through the online store.
As of May 2017, the WeeWorld service has been offline, with little information explaining the apparent closure. At the peak of its popularity, the WeeWorld website was attracting 1.5 million hits per day.
Has WeeWorld Been Closed?
In May 2017, without prior warning, the WeeWorld website and associated apps were shut down and it appears this could mark the end of the service’s existence. Indeed, this was not the first time the site had experienced issues. In 2014, WeeWorld went into administration, but was brought back by long-serving team members.
Since the unexpected closure of the website, there has been very little information released to the public. A comment posted on the WeeWorld Facebook page suggests the company behind WeeWorld may release new apps and services in the future, although there has been no new information on this as of yet. It also remains unknown whether any new apps or services would be connected to WeeWorld, or completely independent of the service.
In 2014, Kraig Walker, an employee for WeeWorld, explained some of the challenges the site had faced. He believed the popularity of websites like Facebook and Twitter had decreased the popularity of online avatars, with people instead preferring their online presence to be a direct extension of their real-life physical presence.
Previously, he explained, internet users had been more open to the idea of their online existence being distinctive from their physical existence, with internet chat users essentially playing the role of their online character. WeeWorld, therefore, faced a challenge in trying to capture its previous user base’s imagination.
This, combined with a lack of investment in the service and the improvements made to online console gaming, meant that there was less overall interest in WeeWorld from teenagers and young adults.
Other sources suggest the website was frequently targeted by online trolls, who were offered protection by the anonymity afforded to them by their WeeMees. This had the knock-on effect of driving away the remaining user base that was trying to use the service as it was intended to be used.
It remains possible that the service will return in the future, although many of the challenges that faced WeeWorld will likely remain, unless there is a fundamental reinvention of how it works.
WeeWorld Login Information.
At present, new users are unable to sign up and registered users are unable to login to the service, because it is offline indefinitely. It is currently unknown whether the service will return in the future, although the lack of communication from the site’s owners suggests this may be unlikely.
Prior to the site’s closure, the WeeWorld login page could be accessed by visiting the homepage and clicking ‘Login’, or by visiting the login page at: http://www.weeworld.com/home/Login. As with the main homepage, this login page is currently unavailable and there has been no indication that it is likely to return in the future.
When the site was online, the login process was simple, with registered users simply having to enter their username and password in order to gain access. It remains to be seen whether these previously registered accounts will be accessible if the service returns in the future, or whether they will be able to be used with any new services or apps offered by the team behind WeeWorld in the future.
